It's not unusual to spend our waking hours in a swirl of thoughts, in distracted and chaotic states of mind. Unhelpful thinking and emotional disturbance can conspire to keep us from effective performance and healthy rest, from connecting with loved ones, even from a sense of satisfaction with our moments and days. Fortunately, there are ways we can directly train our minds to better realize and shift these conditions.
- Have you ever considered that the way your mind works affects how you view yourself and your experience?
- Did you know you can train your mind to identify and shift your thought patterns, even dysfunctional patterns?
Research shows that meditation and mindfulness practice can positively affect:
stress management and anxiety reduction
sleep and sense of energy
academic performance
attention and concentration
empathy and interpersonal relationships

Dan Creek has taught mindfulness training programs at Bowdoin College, University of New England, Southern Maine Community College, and in Portland Public Schools (Casco Bay HS, Deering HS). One of Dan's offerings is a four-session training program designed to teach key mindfulness skills and support the development of simple daily practices that can improve your quality of life. Programs are taught using stories and metaphors, direct instruction, experiential exercises, and group discussion. Skills include practices helpful for relaxation, developing sustained focus, and gaining a greater sense of well-being.
